How do I remove paint from hardwood floors?

The woman who lived in my house before was a faux painter and painted a faux rug onto my hardwood floors. Paint is chipping off, I was never a fan of it, but have hesitated to remove it because I don't want to harm the floors more. Now I need to remove it... looks awful as paint is chipping off. What can I use safely on it to minimize damage to my floor?

i would hire a professional to refinish your wood floors. My daughter had the same situation in a condo ahe recently purchased and ended up refinishing the floors.

Without knowing what kind of paint she used, you will have to experiment. First, try scraping off the paint with a putty knife or a razor blade. It's also possible to use a Scotch-Brite pad or steel wool to remove the paint.

Chemical removers will be another experiment. Mineral spirits or paint removers will more than likely attack the finish of the hardwood floors, so steer away from those. Goof Off and Goo Gone are citrus based and could help as can a product called Painter's Pal. They are designed to clean up paint spatter. Rubbing alcohol used with the ScotchBrite pad might also help.

The thing is that you are going to have to experiment and find out what works in your situation without taking off the floor's finish. Denatured alcohol might soften the paint which can be removed with a combination of putty knife (there are plastic ones out there) and ScotchBrite or steel w
