You can hang a curtain rod from the ceiling and then hang curtains to cover it. Or hang a rod and build barn doors that slide along the rod to hide it. Here are some links on how to do that:

Curtains are a great idea from above, you can also build a shelf for above them and sides so they slide into an enclave and you only see the front (assuming they're front loading)
You could use Contact Paper to change the look of them to some thing you can put up with or don't mind aso much!
