Trim them now. Don't trim below 2 foot or so, you may kill the plants. Then in the spring, just trim the dead out.

in warmer climates, wait until January. I usually trim mine back to about 18 inches from the ground, and they come back big and lovely each year.
I live in TN and I trim them weekly. Every time I go out to cut a few for a weekly arrangement, I trim whatever is blooming back to a joint. I do t want it to take over hell and half of Georgia as we say down south and this has kept it at a small size and I till enjoy weekly blooms.
