I believe it's all a personal preference and budget. I'd love soapstone counters, but that's never going to happen. So I would suggest laminate in a honed finish. It's durable, comes in many colors and designs and is easy to install. Visit your local Home Deport or Lowes to see their wonderful prefabricated sections which can be cut to your dimensions. Remember: measure twice, cut once! Best of luck.

If you are looking for heavy wear, indestructible, cheap and modern look, may I suggest that you check the countertops that schools use in science labs. The material is usually black, but can be cut with a saw and glued in place and is easy to install. Very inexpensive and will go with most decors in a kitchen. Hope this idea helps.
