I'd just brush it down and leave it. Brick is porous and once you paint it, you can never go back. I'd use bright metals and colors to lighten the room instead.

I used on the outside of our house a product called Brick Dye - or it could be Dye Brick. It is from England, but I didn't have any trouble getting it shipped to the States. Worked well and I did it 2 years ago and it has lasted through our snow and hot summers.
