It doesn't matter what is the trend, it matters what is most appreciated by you. What is your choice? Have a good time, J.
Both! There is no right or wrong, just a matter of personal preference.
Painted.
I agree with Judy and Naomie!
If your cabinets have a lovely grain, you might want to refinish them to highlight that; keep in mind amount & type of prep needed beforehand. Paint offers a great number of colors and finish options (satin, gloss, semi-gloss, pebbled, metallic, enamel) and more easily covers problem areas, such as holes left by hardware (knobs, handles, hinges). Prep work is needed before painting too. Or you can combine the look of stain and paint with cabinet refinishing kits that provide color AND woodgrain. If you prefer a self-contained kit, there are several on the market. Twuùo of these are Insl-X Cabinet Kit (Home Depot) or Rust-oleum Cabinet Transformations (Lowe's) include reginising product, sandpaper, tack cloth, etc., plus step-by-step instructions. Tip: for smooth, extremely durable finish, esp. for a glossy or metallic enamel, check with a local auto paint shop. They will usually spray cabinet doors and drawers if you bring them in. You can then use a roller or brush to do the cabinets in same or contrasting color/finish before reinstalling doors.
Lately, it seems that painted is the "trendy" thing on home shows, especially colors like gray. But I believe it really is personal preference. It's your kitchen, do what makes you happy.
