An old oil cloth table cloth would give you a continuous work surface and be beautiful at the same time.

Thanks again. My solution combines the answer from you and another hometalker. I will get thin plywood to cover it and then add oilcloth as a cover. The plywood part sounds easy. It took several days to find the oilcloth I liked. So many of those I found had large or busy designs. I didn't think this would work because I am focussing on jewelry making so wanted something that would not compete with my finding small jewelry findings that have wandered off. I finally found one in a color I like with only subtle swirls in it.
