I wouldn't do a thing to this incredible trunk. I would find an oval, beveled piece of glass, put on top of this trunk and replace that coffee table.
Use it as a coffee table or open it up and display plants of different types, and heights. Good Luck!
from looking at your pictures it fits in....maybe shine with a darker minwax and put a foam cushion on top for seating (large pillow case with a color you like and duct tape in that color is much quicker than sewing and easier to switch the colors too).

I would leave it alone. Just clean it and maybe oil it. Anything you do destroys the value and it's original look. It is a conversation piece, although not so much turned on its side. I'd find another table and use the trunk for a coffee table or blanket storage at the foot of your bed.
