What colors to paint if I'm going to sell these?

Hi :)
I picked these up at someone's curb and plan on giving them a makeover and selling them. One drawer needs adjusting but besides that, they are in great shape. My question is about color. Do I do them solid white? I am find that quite boring. I'm actually liking the 3 tones on the nightstand...just not THOSE tones. So what colors should I chose if I go that route? I am thinking beach-y tones would be best as these would be great for a shore house. Any help would be appreciated :)

Love this, I would love to see it done in gray and yellow. Maybe a glass top painted with yellow flowers under the glass and the chest gray. That would be beautiful. Great find!

I would do glossy black with some glass knobs

I've loved wicker painted dark navy blue, dark grey, and matte black.

The best color for resale would be white, but why not have a little fun even if that does close the market a little bit, they'll be so much fresher looking in something like navy or aqua for a beach house.
  • Katie Katie on Mar 01, 2014
For a beachy look, I'd go with cream and aqua…

White wicker is nice, but it's been done to death. I'd go for a pale, beige-y yellow, or an extremely pale blue. A nice beachy look could be accomplished with a combo of palest blue and pale green, adding shell-shaped hardware.

I would give it a sophisticated beach house feel by using a Cool Grey and Montauk combo from the RL Whitewash collection. I would replace the handles with something driftwood-y or antique (crystal?) depending on the end use.

@Nancy I'm with you. I immediately thought of crystal knobs also. I also think grey would be beautiful - maybe a with a darker grey for the tops. Those colors would fit in with a lot of folks' décor - since she is selling them. :)

Coral and aqua or a "duck egg blue...Annie sloan paint" are all very popular colors for the BEACHY look!!! Good luck!!!! I like Navy too!!!

White, cream, very soft teal or sage green. I'd stay away from bright or intense colors.
  • Opal Opal on Mar 01, 2014
For resale, I say keep it simple. White always sells.
  • Darlene Clonts Darlene Clonts on Mar 01, 2014
do them in an animal print like zebra teen girls will go bananas over that
  • Lesley Pears Lesley Pears on Mar 02, 2014
Annie Sloans Old White is brilliant and would do a good job
  • I am with the white type crowd on this. Perhaps a dark color for the tops as an accent.

Personally I like wicker in white .
  • Jennifer J Jennifer J on Mar 02, 2014
I like the contrast of the top. I would make the top and knobs black and the rest white. You could give it an antique look too.

Sage green is really popular right now and lilac is the color of the year so I would two tone the wicker with one of those colors just a very soft light version and then white for the other color. Put some old glass doorknobs on it for the drawer pulls...lovely!

The color should be something that goes with your decor. If for resale, a pretty cream will be nice...not stark or dark! A piece of plexiglass on top would be nice. Or you could paint them in bright colors like chartreuse and rose or navy and khaki!

I would go with a aqua color. The color is huge and seems to go with most colors.

to sell? off white a clean fresh finish. maybe some lovely scented drawer liners shown with the drawer open a bit for a pop of color and scent .
  • Dixie Dixie on Mar 03, 2014
White... Easier for the buyer to make their own. If you paint it in a specific color or contrast, you'll limit your buyers... It might not be "their" color. Also, white always looks clean & fresh, albeit boring...

Black top and knobs and a sand color for the rest of it.
  • Betty Ganung Betty Ganung on Mar 03, 2014
Have this same set and love it in white. Think white would be best for resale as most people like it and if not could repaint themselves more easily. Coloring would just limit your buyers who weren't into DIY. Great find!

I don't think White looks boring, it goes with any decor, and you can buy new knobs of you want some color.

The company, Maine Cottage, sells lots of colorful coastal style furniture and could give you some ideas. http://www.mainecottage.com/
  • Centrd Centrd on Mar 03, 2014
two or three tone paint wouldn't have been my first choice, but I do like this first combo in the picture below. I also like the wash effect on the second piece. The company, Maine Cottage, that I posted above, is pricey, but they have developed dozens of gorgeous paint colors that are really great for the coastal and/or cottage look, any of which should work well on wicker. I say go for it...I also find white pretty boring and if you choose the right color, someone will fall in love and get really excited about the pieces.

Advertise them first, then let the customer choose. Then it will work for anyone!

Ann Sloan looks great in an antique white color- as it goes well and is nearer to the original color and useable in any decor
  • Kim Dagenais Kim Dagenais on Mar 03, 2014
I agree with Christine Wilson. Anne Sloan Antique White would be a perfect colour. This colour would go with most decors. I might change out the knobs for something nicer. I am sure you will double or triple your money by updating the paint.

@30 results are available, use up and down arrow keys to navigate.Texas I like bold colors. (red, hunter green) with different color knobs. But Black always works.

The less you invest the more profit you will make. And how are you going to paint it? Spray paint, with paint and a paint brush? I would stick with neutral colors. White is my presence for something like this if it is up for re-sell. Custom colors when I do them is for a one if a kind piece. And I also try to keep it very neutral because I want to re-sell it. Bold outdoor furniture doesn't always fit with outside decor. Go to a home store and take a look around. Actually I love chalk paint but I would spray this. Less money involved, easier coverage. If you hand paint it I would use a outdoor paint, a small paint brush with the ends barely tipped in paint and paint in circles to provide even coverage. To much paint and you will be digging it out..no waxing, no aging. Wax melts in heat. Against wax makes it look dirty. Just my two cents have fun , make money!

To sell I would go white or an off white. I myself love teal's but not sure others do :)
  • KrysFL KrysFL on Mar 03, 2014
matte black... 1 tone. let the buyer add décor of splashes of color.
  • Nancy Nancy on Mar 03, 2014
I would paint them either matte black or glossy white and put a piece of plexiglass on the top of each. Wicker is so hard to get anything to stand up on it. For a few extra dollars I think they would sell faster and if you didn't pay for them, then it is all profit.

I say, white. It goes with anything. A neighbor gave me a wicker settee, chair and coffee table that she was going to throw away because one of the legs on the settee was broken. My husband was able to repair it and then sprayed with white Rustolem to protect it and now sits on our covered porch. I would post pictures, but I have been unable to post pictures on this site. Any other color would not have gone well with the house. You may suggest to the buyer they can re-paint with something suitable to their house.

    White, definitely white for wicker!
