this piece considered to be antique? if so consult a dealer and have it appraised. by recovering or paint/ varnish you may devalue the piece. the fainting couch i have was made by my grand father ...sentimental value, not $$$. mine has bare s shaped spring supports, canvas over springs, foam wrapped in batting , fabric wrapped over batting, and secured on the back. keep as much original as you can.
I agree 210% with dfm's answer! I am not an upholster by trade, I have done DIY on a Wing Back Leather chair, I would search You Tube for tutorials and check and see if your community college has an Upholstering class in the Non- Credited Classes offered at many local community colleges which are usually taught by an expert / extremely experienced / business owner and are (most of the time any way) affordable - less than 100. + you supply your own project with fabric and other supplies. You should be able to use the college's tools. Learn as you go. I wanted some ironwork for a yard and I took welding, had a blast was the only 50+ grandma! Learned a lot at a fraction of the cost of buying what I wanted & learned so much! Whatever you do, DO NOT let your piece go! Good luck & God Bless!
