Giant ziplock bags and/or in large under the bed plastic bins.
I've used a wine cabinet -put the skeins in the cubby holes instead of the bottles!
Tupperware or other plastic bins with lids. Keeps the yarn from absorbing "smells" while stored. Or colorful stacking plastic storage bins with one end open, stack your yarn in it. Easy to see and select, also adds color to a room.
Wide Ikea shelves (Lack?) mounted across a six foot deep alcove. Multiple deep and rectangular lined baskets (Michaels and other stores) with each group of skeins in gallon sized ziplock bags tucked inside (ziplock bags can be written on with a ballpoint pen..to label what project the yarn is for). Staggered the baskets with (also ikea) natural wood magazine holders with a lot of my knitting magazines inside, and braced/supported/surrounded by my huge collection of knitting books. Kept the theme in a pale green/white, natural tones against a very pale peach background (paint) and natural oak floor. Started the first shelf a good 18" off the floor and have three very large and high baskets tucked under to hold all the 'extra' yarn -each colour in its own ziplock bag...3 tall (old) tin cans hold knitting needles and sit on the floor. Top shelf holds floral hat boxes with more yarn (had those boxes for years, but they look good here). Haven't yet labeled everything but bought rustic iron label holders online to attach to the baskets. The alcove is in a tiny spot at the top of stairs with a workbench and old typewriter chair beneath a window and across from some white multi-drawer 30"H cabinets with a wood top spanning -creating more work space if I turn the chair. It's a bit tight but light, bright and very functional. ALL of the yarn collected for years fits here, and I also paint glass ornaments with plenty of space on the workbench and wall to store my paint collection and inside the cabinets for all of the other supplies. But do NOT ask me what the last knitting project I completed was! :) I have at least a half-dozen wip's.
I keep my yarn in pretty baskets.
