Are you sure that isn't where the closet is in the room next door? If not, it sounds like a good idea!
Usually there's a reason for a wall to protrude like that. It's either the back of a closet or there's something in the wall, pipes, conduit etc. If you have a basement or a floor above try to figure out what the space is used for. Make some measurements. Most builders wouldn't give up floor space just to even out a wall. You don't want to take down the wall only to have to put it up again. If it is an empty pocket the shelves are a great idea. I'd look around to see if there were any more spots wasted!
Here's a good tutorial. i would first cut an exploratory hole and shine a flashlight in there to make sure there are not pipes etc. Its easier to cover back up if there is pipes in wall.
