You can see little holes on the edges of the vents in the wall board - they are screw holes where you screw in the new vent covers. In the large vent, they are near the corners. On the smaller rectangular vent, they are in the middle of the smaller sides.
You can purchase new heating registers at home improvement stores. Be sure to measure the size of the holes, and good luck!
the problem is I can't screw the register back into the same holes the register came out of

If your registers are metal get some rare earth magnets and glue them to the ceiling. One for each corner should work. The magnets are very strong and will be able to hold the weight of the register. You can get those magnets at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
You could also try Velcro. They make a type that is rated for heavy objects and can be stuck onto "uneven" surfaces. This type of Velcro is very strong.
Personally, I would use the magnets because the register can be removed very easily when you have to paint.
