holes. The holes will not hold the register up on the ceiling.
You could always install new drywall anchors, then drill new holes into the frame, and secure the register with new screws.
Can you post a photo? They should go right back in, some have screws to attach.
USE WEATHER STRIPPING AROUND IT SHOULD HOLD IT IN PLACE HOT GLUE TO FIXTURE
Make sure you are aiming them inward enough to catch the sheat metal
You could use a fastener called a "spring toggle wing" to put the screw back
