How to remove hard water stains from tub

I'm not talking just around the handles of a tub. I live in an apartment that had a hot water leak in the tub . Not a little leak either. The hard water has climbed up the whole side of the tub almost half way down. It really big and really nasty looking. I've tried a mixture of dawn, vinegar, baking soda but it barely touched it. Any ideas?

Try using citric acid powder(from Walmart), Using this in a dishwasher will remove the mineral deposits and make the metal parts shine like new. Citric acid is used in canning to keep fruits from discoloring.
