No chemicals for birds! Rinse out every day and refill with fresh water. A few drops of vinegar will help.
put pennies in bird bath
You need a product that uses enzymes to keep the algae at bay. Birdbath Protector from CareFree Enzymes. People also swear by putting 7 or so pre-1982 pennies in the birdbath, but copper is no guarantee against still needing to clean the bath periodically.
Can bust up those dunks for perfect answer. Ask for these to keep away mosquitoes and algae at any garden center, farm supply store and Walmart has them.
