Someone told me I need to get rid of them by taking away their food source which is grubs and worms.

That's what it takes, but remember they don't eat the same thing. Moles eat earthworms and grubs, while voles are herbivores. Moles also tend to be solitary creatures, so there is much less chance of them doing serious damage in a garden.

  Do you also have an issue with Japanese beetles or other flying insect pests? If so, it's a good indicator you have a grub problem. Voles feed on the grubs. Since I use only organic methods, I don't recommend using the chemical pesticides for getting rid of them, however, there are organic solutions. You can use Milky Spore, it is expensive, but it's specific for grub control (it's a virus that spreads, non-toxic for humans or other animals, birds, etc.), it takes time for it to spread. So we used a beneficial nematodes from Garden's Alive. They only last about a year, but are relatively inexpensive and very, very effective and very easy to apply. Used in combination, with some of the suggestions stated in the article Douglas provided, you should be able to get this problem under control in very short order. Once you get rid of the voles' food source that should solve your problem.

  @Douglas Hunt Great article, thanks for sharing. My problem with moles is in the winter while we are in Florida they burrow and mess up our yard and in the spring we find all the mounds. What can we use in Nov to keep them away during the winter. We return to Maine in late April, early May. thanks,
