Does anyone know what's the best way to clean a carpet? I dont like the stuff you get when you rent a carpet cleaning machine.

For spot cleaning I use a homemade solution with white wash cloth rubbed in circular pattern. Works on pretty much anything except wine. Fill spray bottle with 2 T Ammonia, 1/2 tsp dish detergent, 1/2 tsp lemon juice and the rest of the bottle with water. Shake and spray. Let sit 5 minutes and use white wash cloth to spot clean areas. Doesn't work for large areas unless you like sore knees. :)

I love my Bissell steam cleaner (on my second one) surprisingly beefy for the cost. Simply a great investment. Here are some tips for removing stains. A contribution to our blog from a pro carpet cleaner >> http://www.buildingmoxie.com/2012/08/how-to-remove-carpet-stains/ ... know it's not much but I hope it helps.

I agree the Bissell steam cleaner is a great investment. They are so easy to use too.

I have one of the bissell spot cleaners, and it is quite a handy little thing to have. Cuts down on the need to do a whole carpet clean.

I have a Bissell spot cleaner and also the full size upright cleaner. I do my carpets every two weeks. I use the spot cleaner as needed for anything like mud or dirt and spilled who knows what. When I use the upright I use the hottest tap water only. That way you don't have that soapy residue left since you only spot clean. I use generic carpet shampoo from Wal-Mart in the spot cleaner. I have had a Hoover cleaner but the brush head breaks and is very expensive to fix. Also the tank bottoms leak. The Bissell uses a "bladder" system where it's just one tank that fills and when water is sucked up it goes to the outside of the bladder in the same tank. Really easy machine! Bissell is a brand. Check Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

Oh Tonny, a Bissell steam cleaner is an American brand and I am not sure if they ship outside the United States or not, but you can look at them at Bissell.com. I have a small updated Green Machine and I love it, but and again I don't know if you can find them in The Netherlands, the company is called Stanley Steamer, and I have had a service from them in my old apartment and it took away all the stains from pets, etc. When you go on the Bissell website, you can ask them questions and maybe they will ship to you.

The best way for me to clean a carpet is to have it done professionally. There are some jobs, that no matter how hard I try, I just can't beat the pros.

I agree Bissell is the way to go and like others I to am on my second machine. I got the upright model but the cheaper version first then the 2nd one I got was the big one. The first still worked fine I just gave it to my brother. It came in real handy for the pet stains. Just a little fyi if you have light colored carpet peroxide works wonderful on pet accidents! It takes away any staining and smell. After I tried so many products I found that works best! It seems we've had a puppy for the last 4 years! lol We now have 3 dogs- One is 11, one is 4 and one is 6 months.

To add to the previous posts. It sounds like it would be easiest to rent a cleaner; they are pretty inexpensive for a day and are often more powerful than a home cleaner. I used my Bissell cleaner to clean my sons rental and there were some grease spots on the carpet from his boots. I used a tiny bit of dawn and rubbed it in with my finger after I had used the Bissell. Then I used the cleaner with hot water only and rinsed it very well. Folex carpet cleaner is also amazing at lifting any sort of hard to remove dirt, pet stains, etc. I buy it from Bed, Bath & Beyond, but I believe they sell larger amounts at Lower and Home Depot. Good Luck!

the best time for cleaning carpet is in the winter- at least in my area. humidity levels are low and the carpet/pad dries quicker. no musty odors. I have had pro's in to clean carpet.....to prep the house for sale. $$$$ but worth it so i could continue to pack/ box up belongings. other wise little green machine.
