In this post I will show you, how I made a shoe storage from pallet wood and river stones.
It’s very simple and easy to make this shoe storage, but at the same time it looks very unique and cozy. How I did it - you can check by looking DIY video or you can follow up instructions bellow.
I used two planks. which were left over from previous projects. Take two pieces at a length of 45 centimeters and another two as well. These planks of wood will form our box walls. Measure and saw the pieces to length.
Clamp them down so they can be drilled together in the shape of a square. I used scrap plywood for the bottom part of the box and sawed it to size.
Apply glue around the perimeter and screw it in place with a drill. Put on a pair of gloves and stain the surface for a stunning finish. I used water based wood oil and softly applied it with a paint brush. I continued to give it a light sanding with a 120 grit sandpaper to remove any remaining roughness. It also gives gave the coloring a nice finish.
I cut and applied furniture pads to the bottom of the box to prevent any scratching to my floor. It's a very good idea to include these. Apply one at each corner and then one in the middle.
Now place it at your door entrance. Fill the box with pretty river stones. Start off by placing a few in the box and then empty the whole bag to fill the full box. spread them evenly throughout the box and there is just one more step.
A quick note first. Depending on how many shoes you plan to place, you can make the box wider or longer. I wanted mine to hold three pairs of shoes. It was the perfect size for one larger pair and two smaller pairs. Finally, add your shoes and enjoy using this shoe storage!

Have a question about this project?
Are the stones just for decor purposes?
How do you drain the water that drips to the bottom of the pan? I live where it rains a lot and I would think the bottom would rot or leak to the floor. Very nice though. I think I’m going to add some river rock to my rubber shoe tray.
Looks very nice but doesn’t the weight of the rocks make it difficult to move when cleaning floors?
