Hardwood floor help

by Skline
Our former tenant didn't take care of the hardwood floors! They are dirty in places, gum stuck here and there, red magic marker in a place, and almost black in the high traffic areas. An inexpensive fix is what I'm hoping for.

  • I would get some WD40 and start with that for the gum and marks. Have a window open or ventilation is you are using it a lot. But the stuff works on just about anything. I now have cans of it in the garage and house! I also like {as seen on tv} totally awesome cleaner at the Dollar Tree-not the dollar tree cheap brand. This cleaner is concentrated and can be mixed in another spray bottle to dilute. I use it both ways depending upon the stains. It is strong and so be careful when spraying. It gets grease and oil out of clothes and stains off walls. I would start with these 2 things...good luck

Go rent you a buffer and use a fine sand paper 120 or better and go over the floor moving it at all times , then either stain it or leave it like it is when finished ..Apply some poly urethane after you get all the saw dust up , and rent it out again .. :)
  • Terry's Flooring is right on this. While depending upon the current finish you may have luck with the WD-40 but if you have a poorly sealed floor, that chemical may do more harm then good. A light sanding, then cleaning followed by several coats of a new poly will do the trick. They rent buffing machines that you use with a round sanding disk called a screen sander. It takes very little off and removes the top finish without causing damage to the original floor. Once done good cleaning and poly.

Woodbridge Environmental is right. WD 40 will probably do more harm than good.and remember. Sand it and take pictures when your done so that the next tenant can't say that it was in bad shape when they rented it.
  • WD40 is used to by many to remove crayon, gum, ink, marker, etc from all kinds of surfaces. I also forgot to mention rubbing alcohol works wonders on removing gunk too. the following is a link that I searched to show you that WD40 can be used to clean hardwood floors: http://www.ehow.com/how_7578006_use-wd40-wood-floors.html The questions was for an inexpensive fix and trying to clean the floors with everyday products is the first step. I have used this to remove gum and crayon from floors and walls and it works. You do have to clean the surface afterwards because there is a residue.

What about products like Orange Glo that were used years ago? Not as popular now, but still around.
