Gail Salminen on Mar 08, 2014@Anna Viveros my mother used to bring these home from the health food store she worked at. I have several in the basement. Definitely originated as a shipping barrel for cheese. They paint up nicely and also take wall paper easily.Helpful Reply

L. Risor on Mar 08, 2014It's a shaker style cheese box, my mom tole painrted them in the 70's. Reminds me of Peter Hunts style. http://www.peasantvillage.com/ https://www.google.com/search?q=%22peter+hunt%22&client=firefox-a&hs=YrU&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=gM0bU-zYD6TN2AW9xoG4DA&ved=0CD4QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=606#channel=sb&q=peter%20hunt%20artist&revid=676345039&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&tbm=isch&imgdii=_Helpful Reply

JeDonne M on Mar 09, 2014Have you checked for a signature or date? It looks like tole painting done with a white-washed background. There is a cheese factory in our town, they do come in big, for lack of a better word, drums that would easily fit into a cheese box. The older style of tole was usually on a dark background. I know whitewashing was an old paint form, it made a resurgence in the 80's.Helpful Reply

Terra Gazelle on Mar 09, 2014I have researched and could not find any cheese box..but there are several boxes that are wood, shaped like this and handpainted called Tine Boxes..Tine means Kit in Scandinavia. So it could be a kit box, or a sewing box. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/367958232026679323/Helpful Reply

Linda T on Mar 09, 2014Firstly, a hat box would be constructed with a good seam, and have a 'rope' handle to carry it with. A cheese box, on the other hand, is put together with staples. @@Sherie Walden and @Terra Gazelle I have found cheddar boxes from free to $3.00 at farmer's markets. (You need to smile a lot, or look slightly pathetic, HA!) Don't seem too eager either, in case the price goes up!Helpful Reply

Denise Rankin on Mar 09, 2014Whatever type of shipping box it is, it is gorgeous! But I can tell you that it is NOT Pennsylvania Dutch. The style of the flowers is more Rosemaling then what you find in true PA Dutch style, Whoever painted it and when, they did a great job!Helpful Reply

Terra Gazelle on Mar 09, 2014I think that kind of design is called Rosemaling..and I have seen some that was from the 1800's.Helpful Reply

Lynn Scapatici Couch Myers on Mar 10, 2014I'm fairly certain that it is, in fact, a cheese box. Grocery stores used to receive Red Rind Hoop cheese in these type of boxes and the meat market would cut it into wedges/chunks, wrap and label it for sale by weight. I used to be able to buy shorter ones from a local grocery store for a couple dollars each, but I haven't seen them in stores in about 15 years. Most stores now get their cheese already cut and prepackaged. If you live in a larger city, you might check with a specialty food store or whole foods market that may still get their cheese in bulk sizes.Helpful Reply
