Budget friendly options for a refurbished kitchen island countertop?

I'm converting an antique buffet into an island. Base will be painted but the top is veneer so I would like to cover it. Hoping to spend less than $250. Would be great to have an overhang on the back side for a couple of barstools. Can't afford granite but need something durable.
Thanks!

I'm wondering what the rest of your countertop is and why you would not be looking to match that.

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for a plastic laminate countertop. There are so many color/pattern options and at a glance you won't notice it's not what it pretends to be. Call a local cabinet shop and tell them the size you would like. Guessing that you would be wanting around 36" x 72" I believe that will be well within your budget. Should have enough cash left in the budget to purchase 3 wooden corbels to support the overhang, if you do the installation yourself.

Our countertops are granite. We are going to check it out but also want to consider all options. Thanks!

You can tile it or see if you can get a butcher board counter top. Mosaic tile it would be amazing

An old solid door would be neat, it would be big enough to put stools on one side too! You would need to put a waterproof sealer on the wood.

The laminate would not look good next to granite. It'll probably go past your budget but how about a butcher's block? Depending a lot on how your kitchen colors and materials go it might be a nice contrast. Fact is granite tends to be one of the lower cost options after you move away from laminates.
