Chalk paint does not require primer and minimal sanding. Clean, dry and dull is the rule. If you Chalk paint you will want to seal with a water based poly or the paste wax.
Chalk paint is a thicker paint made with actual chalk. Because of the opacity of the Plaster of Paris in the paint you don't need primer. Again, because of the plaster, it fills in the nooks and crannies that we can't always see but we feel with our hands as we run them across bare wood.

Hello, I have used chalk paint a lot and like it very much. It is like other paint, if you are painting on a light surface you will probably just need a couple coats but you would have to prime anything dark. I did not do any sanding when I used it and it came out great.
