When I turned on the ceiling fan I smelled something burning.

I turned it off to make sure the smell was from turning on the ceiling fan. How do I find out what is happening?
Buy a more expensive quality-quality made fan with blades than can be balanced.

Might be time to purchase a new fan. Usually the noises you describe means the bearings in the motor are going bad.
Mine does that when it gets off-balance, Try turning it off and just balance all the blades. Should work.
And if you can't fix it, buy a new fan. You don't want it shorting out in the middle of the night. 😇💞
1) Adjust the cap by lifting it upwards gently. 2) Lift the cap gentl and spray WD40.
