Hello! According to my research, you live in zone 7. Irises are hardy in zones 8 - 10. Here is the information I found:

you plant iris in the spring. when you plant them, make the hole, then make a mound in the bottom of the hole, put the body of the root on the mound and arrange the roots on the sides. iris are planted kinda shallow. add a dab of fertilizer to the hole. fill it in. come fall, trim the leaves off to about 4-5 inches above the soil. i was taught to cut the leaves back on a 45 degree angle.. keeps the bed looking tidy.
Yes, it does matter where you live. In north Texas we plant bulbs in Feb. or early March, with later planting in April and May for late summer blooms. You can add about four weeks to your schedule. Best wishes 😇💞
