Start with lower number grit/grade and work your way up to higher number grade. Use light pressure with the lower number grit which is coarser, so you remove paint but not chew up the wood (40-60 grit). I like to use stripper first and then sand fyi. Also, always follow the grain of the wood. Here's a tutorial I found that might be of help:https://www.lowes.com/projects/woodworking-and-crafts/sandpaper-buying-guide/project

Thank you we found the table in our church basement very solid wood and it even has a leaf so we want to restore it so we will have extra dining accommodations when we have our church functions. I will use your tutorial

That depends on what type of wood, the condition of the wood, and how you plan on painting it

Depending on the existing finish on your table, you might only have to give your table a light sand before painting. Also, what is your table made of? If it's solid wood sanding it like Cynthia suggests might be the way you want to go, but if it's only veneer, or wood laminate it's possible to sand right through the veneer.

If you are getting a finish off - use the lowest number for the most effective way to get rid of the paint or existing finish.
