Taking out an old shaggy rug carpet (wall to wall) and adding a tiled, laminated or real wood flooring to a smallish room. The surface could have a stain master rug for pets. Preferably I wouldn't. I am looking for a great product that doesn't start pealing or water damages are not an issue . The square feet area of 15'x12 ' is next to kitchen and getting high traffic. Lastly it cannot be too thicker then 1/2 inch or a person could trip from stepping up upon new floors from kitchen or hallway or steps.

  • Have you thought about vinyl? I was going to suggest tile but that may not work. The new vinyl products are awesome! I just had some installed in my neighbors kitchen that also leads out to the back yard. They have kids and pets. Now I want it!

Whatever flooring you choose to use, make sure your sub-floor is correctly installed with no movement when walked on. If you go with tile I highly recommend using a layer of tile backer-board. Lumber yards or home improvement stores carry it in several thicknesses. If you choose tile make certain you seal the grout lines once they have cured. Since the area gets a lot of traffic and if you use tile I suggest you consider using several coats (at least two, and possibly three) of water-based varnish (Polyurthane) as a sealer. I used it on my kitchen floor after I had laid the tiles and all I had to do was mop the floor to get the tile and grout lines clean.

The VCT tiles would work great! They can be a little tricky to lay but hold up well to heavy traffic and spills & mopping are no problem!

I will attach a color sheet to give you an idea of what it looks like.
