Hi John. I would sand the table. It is hard to get the water stain out, so I would paint it or do a paint wash where you mix water and paint and apply like a stain. If you want a solid color prime first and then paint.
Sand the table thoroughly to remove any existing finish, then use a good quality primer prior to painting
