How do I get rid of sand burrs in my yard?

I have a 'patch' of sand burrs between my walkway and the car and another by the steps to the porch. The dog brings them in on her coat and occasionally I have to pull one out of her paw. My shoes have to be shed outside and carried in to the trash bin to clean the bottom.
I tried to put in a stone path, sprayed with weed killer but they keep coming back and are growing between the stones. I am not sure what else to do.
