We live in Phoenix are and our last house had a pool... unless you want to do a major algae removal in the spring... you need to maintain the chemical balance over the winter... the temps do not get low enough to stop the algae.
You can reduce the amount of time the filter system runs... say from 8 hours to 5-6 hours... but it still needs to run every day.
"The most economical way to maintain your pool is to:
continue to look after your pool!
Anything else is a false economy; When summer hits, you’ll have to spend even more time & money to repair the damage caused to your pool by ignoring it over winter………." Well, here are tips, suggestions and ideas about maintaining your pool over the winter. Maybe you can use these basic concepts and adjust or tweak the chemicals? http://www.thepoolplanner.com.au/wordpress/?p=212
Continue doing the pool like you did in the summer, just not as often....check on it and also you can use a pool cover to block out the sun because that is what causes the algae. Whatever you do, make sure that you run the pool filter.
Close your pool down for the winter or until May. Blow out your lines, fill with Pool Antifreeze, tap those off. Buy some "Winter Aid" pool closing chemicals & pour those in. This is what keeps the water clean until opening in May. Turn off your pump, put your winter cover on & you're done until May! No more chemicals to buy, no cleanings, & no electricity used.
