You can build a sturdy, well-built arbor with four posts and the traditional cross beams. If you mean to make it part of your house you have to check with the zoning board and building inspector about what you can and cannot do.
I saw this on a d-i-y show (sorry, can't remember which). They left the porch intact, and put concrete footings in (the tubes filled with concrete, dug down to the frost line), topping them with metal anchors for posts. The footings were immediately next to the porch. Then they built a roof over the porch, with posts down to the footings. They then camouflaged the footing/lower part of the posts with a box built around them made of brick or stone, to replicate a Craftsman-style porch. At the top, they just finished the post where it disappeared into the box with a millwork surround.
