How do I make this look smoother?

We took off the Melamine (thermofoil) off the kitchen cabinet and was doing a test with paint. I noticed in the groove area I must've ripped it up and it has made the area all rough. What can I do to make this appear smoother so it doesn't look like crap.

You should be able to use a fine grain sandpaper and lightly sand the rough areas to make them a bit smoother before painting. Be sure to use a coat of primer to help prevent all of the paint from completely soaking into the boards...

I would use the finest grain sandpaper you can find...something less than 100 if possible....even a really fine grade like 220 might help. Anything too coarse will probably make it worse. Unfortunately, since it is particle board, it will probably not get completely smooth. If there are some spots that are really terribly rough, you may want to use a little spackle or wood filler to smooth them out. You can smooth the spackle on, let it dry, then sand it a bit to give you a smoother appearance.
