You have to treat it like a laminate counter, no heat. As for food safety, you can put something like an apple down on it and probably don't need to worry.
I have a laminate counter, and I leave a glass cutting board on it for heated items and making sandwiches etc. If I need to cut fruits and veggies, I use a regular cutting board.
That is probably not the answer you are looking for, but I would worry more about putting a poly top coat or epoxy around food than the plastic itself.
The best way to prevent issues with heat is to use trivets.

You have to be gentle with contact paper coverings, You can't heat proof it nor can you cut on it, you must use cutting boards and keep heat off of it.
Contact paper is not made for high heat. You use a blow dryer to loosen it. I have contact paper on my shelves, they clean up nice with a light spray of alcohol. I don't recommend contact paper for counter tops, if it rips, you have to do it over. Heat will loosen the paper or moisture.
