i know a lot of people who will and you can with just this small proviso - it depends on the cabinet finish. if the doors and everything are wood or a real good paper covering then you can. However, if they are a cheaper paper then the moisture in the paint will make the wood look paper bubble and peal. You can usually tell by looking. If they are a plastic door then they will probably paint ok, but just check with your local paint store concerning the proper paint to use.

Just my $0.02 worth, be careful that the stain doesn't bleed through the finish, so a quality sealer (Zinser) stain blocker would be an ideal first coat, then any other colour over will be fine.
Use ESP ( Easy Surface Preparation) then undercoat and then Topcoat.
Prime the cabinets with Kilz first for the proper application of paint
