You can try to redye them although your success will depend on what kind of fabric it is. The more cotton it contains the more luck you should have. Follow rit dye package directions carefully and then “set” the dye in vinegar when you are done.
My experience with dying clothes is that you have to wash them with dark colors. My husband does this to his shirts. He works outdoors in the summer and I think it's the combination of his sweat and the sun. The solution would to get lighter colored clothing.
Faded t-shirts look great! Keep them "as is."
I've found that adding 1/2 C. of vinegar to the dark load help with the fading. At some point tho, everything fades. I wear my stuff to death too and have dyed with Rit. It's messy but if you follow directions, it works good and will give you more wearings and not have the Grey look.
I bet you are washing clothes in hot water! That will fade anything. I have used cold water for over 40 years, and my clothes six, seven, even ten years old look as good as new. Scientific studies have confirmed that cold water washing is fine unless someone in the household is sick; for normal usage the dryer gets rid of the germs. Even then you can wash that person's clothing and linens separately in hot water and do the rest of your laundry in cold. I'll add that you MUST follow laundry instructions from the tag inside the clothing. I once bought a dress at Sears that I particularly liked but the laundry tag said to wash it flat in cold water and lay it flat to dry. I didn't like that one bit but I did it. The dress was sold only during a three-month period. Two years later my dress was still like new, but one day when I was having a garage sale a woman showed up wearing an identical dress. It was faded beyond belief. It HAD to be the same age as my dress, but obviously she hadn't followed laundry instructions.
All great tips, suggestions and ideas, and I absolutely always hang my clothes to dry so the sun MAY be playing a role in the fading. Thank you, everyone for taking the time to respond!
Thanks for your helpful information!
Excellent advice! Thanks so much!
Are you washing in cold water? I also wash all my very dark colors- black and navy blue together. Do NOT wash black with anything other than black or navy.
