Hanging on peg board or simply on nails if open studs are available? I have seen a cute idea where the shape of the tool is also outlined on the pegboard so the hammer for example always goes back in the same place.
The bigger things like levels and clamps go on the wall now. I hammered thicker finish nails into a long board that is screwed into studs, works well. I've always kept tools in a toolbox and hated it. Several weeks ago a neighbor put out a workbench with 2 shallow drawers. All my everyday tools fit in a single 3" deep drawer - amazing! Gave neighbor the extremely cute but dysfunctional box. Consider shallow drawers for screwdrivers, hammers, pliers and such, deep ones will swallow tools up. My sockets are on a strip with spring holders that keeps them in good order but the handles and adapters are a mess as are the wrenches - stuck in a fairly useless tool box. Power tools are generally in the case they come in and extra bits are in labeled shoe boxes.
I'm considering downsizing garage storage even more. If I do so I'm thinking about using rain guttering as shallow bins and even wall hung shoe pockets for lighter weight things so long as they are taller than the pocket. I know anything that cannot be seen will be lost forever.
