Sherrie on Mar 14, 2014There are several ways. My favorite way Is 1 cup of flat paint or any paint I like flat 1 tablespoon of calcium carbonate 2 tablespoons hot water Mix hot water and calcium carbonate and let water cool Then add to paint You can also use Flat paint, or any paint I just like flat I table spoon plaster Paris 3 table spoons of hot hot water Mix together water and plaster Paris let cool Mix with paint If any of these get to thick ad water (cold) and thin it down. I would suggest you buy a sample of chalk paint first. This way you can get the feel of it and see how it feels and look. You can also get the look of chalk painted pieces using plain paint. There are a zillion old time recipes to make your own paints. I have made milk paint, lime slurry paint. And used plain ole paint. I love chalk paint and yes I purchase a lot of Anne Sloan but I also know this isn't the only way to paint or to get that old time look. I love pottery barn look and found out Sherman Williams sells the paint to get that look. Painting is artistic and to me there is no wrong way of doing it.Helpful Reply

Handan & Greg @ The Navage Patch on Apr 01, 2016Hello Marcia, I do my own mix with some latex paint, real chalk (calcium carbonate) and talc. I've seen so many recipes online but I have yet to see anyone using talc in their homemade chalk paints which surprises me because talc enhances the bonding in the paint and gives the velvety feel to your painted piece. It helps the paint drying faster while works as an anti-cracking agent. If you like see the proportions of what I use please visit: http://thenavagepatch.com/homemade-chalk-type-paint-recipe/ Good luck on your projects! -HandanHelpful Reply
