when is the best time to split fountain grasses?

Sue Sullivan on Jul 28, 2011My landscaper recommends both cutting them down to the ground and/or separating them in the early spring before everything starts growing. For us in SW Ohio, that would probably be late March or early April. :-)Helpful Reply

Erica Glasener on Jul 28, 2011Yep, spring time is the best time to cut back and or divide your ornamental grasses. They don't like to be transplanted in the fall either. I learnded this the hard way in Pennsylvania one year when I moved some ornamental grasses in the fall and they all died as I remember it.Helpful Reply
