Hi Judith, Suggest you remove the drawer from the cabinet and patch the hole on the OUTSIDE of the drawer. A thin piece of wood and wood glue should do the trick. Slide the drawer back in. Hope this is helpful. :)
Perhaps another idea would be a thick piece of felt over a piece of foam or cork standing at the back, on the inside of the drawer? That way,it would protect the tips of the knives and maybe even quiet them down a bit from sliding to and fro with the drawer's movements? Furniture that is made abroad can have all kinds of modifications to lighten shipping weight, ie, plastic drawer backs that most people wouldn't notice. A friend of mine got a "great deal" on inexpensive cupboards for his kitchen. He thought the discount was because they came unassembled, which he knew he could assemble. When he opened the boxes, the cabinets were basically cardboard with a vinyl sticker that was a photograph of wood grain, and exactly the same pattern with a knot hole for every cabinet front... very funny-looking, but a waste of his money...

This is a fairly typical construction. The hole can be repaired with a good tw part
Well, dang! It sure did get cut off. Well, as I was saying, with a good two part epoxy and fiberglass. You can find a kit at any auto repair store. The store can help you with how to use. But, here's a quick tutorial: mix the epoxy - small amount - put around the hole, place a bit of the fiberglass over the hole and mix up more epoxy and cover. Smooth with spatula or putty knife. Allow to dry. Sand smooth. Once you've done the fix, place felt over it to stop the sharp knives.
There's that's better.
