I have had good success putting a generous amount of blood meal around my plants. You can buy it at any garden center. Sometimes they sell blood meal mixed with something...that's not what you want. You want to use the stand alone blood meal for the best effect. It won't last forever, you'll need to add more as it gets washed into the soil by the rain. It's also a good nutrient for your plants.
Nancy, we mix Pine Sol half and half with water, put in a squeeze bottle and squirt around the perimeter of the plants. Pine Sol contains pine oil that stays through several rains. Blood meal detracts squirrels, but it attracts raccoons, bears, coyotes, dogs and other carnivores.
