Most cake decorator shops will sell plastic picks which you can use to put fresh flowers or anything into cake, if you are just putting them on side then they should be fairly safe for a day or so if just iced onto it without the stems actually touching icing
Don't is the answer. Just in case. Why do you want to anyway?
Your going to make this cake yourself, so call your local supermarket's bakery department and ask what's the best thing to do. When you get fresh flowers, and it comes with a plant, they stick the flowers in those pointed little wells and fill them with water. Maybe you can find something at your local craft store, that's similar to that, for the flowers, without the water. You can use straws, their thin enough to put in a cake, and put the flower in that. Good Luck!
