Try looking for foam at Joanne Fabrics. You can also take old comforters and cut to size and stack. Five or six make a nice comfy bed. You can stitch together or use a fitted sheet to hold in place. However, using the fitted sheet makes the bedding easy to clean when needed.
Walmart, Target sell memory foam mattresses. If the bed area is an odd size, buy one slightly larger than your dimensions and cut (with an electric knife) to fit. Cover with a ZIP on mattress cover (completely covers the whole thing) or make one to fit... this will keep the mattress foam clean.
Make the bed with the linens of your choice and there you go.
Use whatever makes you happy! There are no rules.
The fleece throws with bears, trees, etc. would be so cute. Washable, durable, warm, and no need to cover them up!
A chenille bedspread would be cute! How vintage? go with whatever was popular in the year it was built color wise or decorations back then!
