I personally do not think the vinyl would lay correctly on carpet

I wouldn't do that . Pull the rug up and use it for a pattern to cut the vinyl and lay the vinyl down .If the flooring under the rug has any nails or stuff on it scrape it off so it doesn't pop through the vinyl. If need be put new ply wood down first then the vinyl.Putting vinyl over a rug isn't a good idea ever.

I wouldn't think so. Not solid enough that the vinyl will lay flat. I have put vinyl over vinyl but never carpet. Pain in the but, time consuming and hard work but pull the carpet, clean up staples, fill any dips or irregulars in sub flooring and then put vinyl in. Best way to get long life out of your floor.

  • I wouldn't. A good installer will refuse to do so. Your floor is only as good as the sub flooring beneath it. Chances are it will falil in the short term then you need to rip everything out and start over - hence spending mony twice instead of once. Do the job right the first time.
