It depends on your area, but I like Cypress Mulch. We live in an area that gets a lot of rain during the fall and winter, and the Cypress Mulch is nice because it will not float away like some other wood mulches do. I also like the natural brown color.
I too like the cypress mulch. It is a natural color that I like, of course I myself don't like the colored mulches since they take away from the beauty of the plants that are over them and I just like the way it behaves no matter the weather, it doesn't shift around when it rains hard, like it did this year, for hours at a time.
Depends on what look you are going for and areas being covered. I have bark, river rock and tumbled pea gravel and all look good, just different applications for different areas around my home. Also depends on what part of the country you live in too. Black mulch looks really striking, but where I live it is 100+ already and black mulch just makes plants fry, and bleaches out quickly and looks like burned charcoal in no time.
What area would you like to cover?
i like wood chip....doesn't smell, easy to use and stays put.
Mulch is usually made from local tree bark..... here in the PNW its fir bark.
We use Cedar. Bugs hate it and so do pets. Both can tear up a garden. And it looks really pretty. I like the red contrast with the green of the plants.
I use recycled tire mulch. Last a long time.
I use recycled rubber mulch. Keeps you from having to replace it every year.
