Possibly an oil-based stain....maybe from splattered food with oil in it (eg. spaghetti sauce, etc.)??
Nothing says it has to stay the same color. Your local hardware store will have different wood products to remove stains if you can, but if not, I would just paint it.
If Unfinished without a sealer on it will take up any thing at all like a sponge , and once marked it will not come out. the marks.....
Did you try using a magic eraser? They work wonders on lots of hard to clean surfaces.
Try toothpaste-not the gel-the white.
Honestly, what it looks like is, PENCIL ERASER ✏️ marks. Does anyone sit at that table for homework or crafting ideas??
When you rub a pencil eraser on a table it leaves particles of the eraser in the wood. I used to clean homes & I found (by trial & error) that wiping the table with very diluted pinesol or straight vinegar takes the mark away pretty well. But it looks even better if you use a little furniture polish and wipe it overtop of the whole table. *Hope that helps
Always a pleasure........
Has it been in storage? It looks kind of like when a piece has had a blanket/covering on it and then sweated a bit.
Try some good furniture cleaner, Murphy's oil soap may work.
I heard to rub a little mayonnaise in a circular motion on it try a test area fitst
