Shower diverter fell apart

I can't figure out how to put this back together. I tried with the rubber ring around the skinny part of the rod, inserted from underneath and screwed in from the top but it isn't working. I'm slightly stressed out because I'm just a renter. And also because I need to take a shower soon.
The mysterious bits and pieces
And nope, I cannot remove that from the wall

The tub spout unscrews, righty tighty, lefty lucy. Probably tight though. Easier to replace the spout. It looks like the washer has failed, if so, trying to put it back may be useless.

Can you take the parts to Home Depot or a hardware store like Ace? I might play a bit of "helpless woman" and start by asking does the rubber ring needs to be replaced, do these other parts look worn and by the way...how does this all fit back together?
  • Call your landlord. If you are a renter and it is not your responsibility unless you agreed to do repairs. Plumbing can be easy but if you do not know what you are doing, then I would make the call! Good luck
