They like sun, BUT it depends on where you live and the variety of hydrangea you have. Here are a couple good general links. Where I live it is too hot in summer, 100+ for months on end.

Any blooming plants require 6 to 8 hours of direct sun/day. Google them for complete instructions but I believe they require ascetic soil to promote blooming -- not sure.
Mine like more indirect sun
Found that they do better in semi shade. In the sun the leaves burn on me. One year pruned to much took the next year to bloom.
Always heard better with a north exposure. Have you tried changing colors, believe it is epsom salt you pour around the base. Please check internet for more ideas, lots of fun to experiment. Gardening Posts are good places to use. Like, Master Gardeners. Good luck!
