We don;t know where you live, how cold it gets, which side of the house are they planted on and what kind of plants are these. The only thing I can readily identify is a dandelion-you do not have to cover that up!

Depends where you live and what they are

If you planted hardy shrubs for your area there is no need to protect them

You could google the plant name and always a good place is your extension agent (it will either be a County or State which is sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture.)

Are you talking about that little pine tree.? I would dig that thing up and move it about 10 feet from your foundation.... when it gets big its gonna tear up the foundation and basement floor.

Ok That little plant looks like it could be a Japanese Yew. Takes some more pictures at different angles and a small sample and go to a local nursery for a positive ID or to your local county agricultural extension office. If this is a plant you purchased, see if a plant tag might still be attached to the plant. In any case definitely remove all the grass, dandelions, pennywort and other weeds around it and surround with about 2 - 3 inches of mulch to protect it until you get a good ID on the little thing. If you find out that it is a shrub and it's size; take the total width that it would grow, divide by half and then add 1.5 feet. That would be the minimum distance from any structure. Example: if it gets 8 feet wide; divide by half that give 4 feet then add 1.5 feet which give a total of 5.5 feet from any structure. If you find out that it is a tree; divide the total width in half then add 10 feet that should be the minimum from any structure. Best to find out what it is before it get much bigger. As to covering; it appears that you are in growing zone 6a; so covering should not be necessary, unless you are expecting an ice storm or extremely large amount of snow. Just make sure you remove the covering after the storm.
