Should I paint my interior doors black?

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Mar 19, 2014If the wooden doors are paint quality and not stain quality, no you will not hurt the value. If you were to paint a stain grade door or trim and cover the beauty of that quality, again you would not hurt value but you would be nuts to do it. A 50 year old home that has hollow core luan doors they really do not offer any value at all. So replacing them perhaps with a raised panel colonial style door with trims might even increase the value. Had the house been a 100 year old home, then there is more value in the doors and restoring them would be a better option. And because your planning to stay there is no reason why you should not paint them the color of your choice. But remember, black doors are not the norm, and any color choices that you make that personalize your home will make it more difficult later on to sell it as most do not paint interior doors dark colors. So be prepared to repaint them again prior to selling if you want to sell quicker.Helpful Reply

Sue Curwin on Mar 19, 2014These doors are the cheap kind of mahogany, and that is why we are replacing them. As far as the painting of them, ugh! I would SO love to paint them a color, but if we end up selling our house in 5 years, I'm not much looking forward to having to repaint them. Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it!Helpful Reply

Z on Mar 19, 2014I'm with Bob (WE) on this. Black painted interior doors are a trend that not too many are following, which would seem that not that many care for them, so I'd not paint them black. What style is your home Sue?Helpful Reply

Z on Mar 19, 2014By the way Sue, have you gotten started on the fireplace surround yet? Are you still planning on using the idea from my virtual? I think it was this one you liked the most.Helpful Reply

Sue Curwin on Mar 20, 2014So sad, Becky, just so sad lol! Because they look so darn sharp, in a very sophisticated kind of way. Then again, I have too many other things I want done to this house to want to have to paint them out again in a couple of years. My house is a 4 level back split (?). The back door is on the side of the house. Going down from the back door, you have two other levels.Helpful Reply

Sue Curwin on Mar 20, 2014Ah, you remember me! As much as I loved (!!!) that look, in the end, I didn't want to give my husband more work. He's so, SO tired of home renovations! So, after thinking, and thinking, and some more thinking, I think (lol!) I'm going to go with painting the fireplace out. An acquaintance from church had us drop by her house, since she painted hers out, and my husband actually loved it! We are also getting a new, "wireless" TV, to eliminate the "clutter", and put that TV downstairs in our family room, since the one we have down there is on it's last legs, and could have come out of the ark, lol! The paintings have also been removed and have gone in other rooms. Bit, by bit, it's looking a lot less cluttered. I was going to post pictures, but I have been having computer problems, AND I am working on a new blog, so I wanted to save my "good stuff" for the fresh new one. By the way, thanks so much for remembering me! And sorry for the "novel"!Helpful Reply
