Im not sure of preventable measure if you are looking for repair it might be to restain.

My son sucessfully restored his pleather sofa wear - using a ( brown)leather paint from Amazon. Very unnoticeable - impressive repair.....very slight difference in sheen. You could polish it I suppose.

This product has very positive reviews on Amazon, might be worth consideration.

Peel it back and stick fabric tape to the underside. Press back into place. Any spaces colour in with Sharpie pens and polish with the right colour shoe polish....

This is not so much a repair, but something I’m looking at getting for Roberts well-used recliner. At Walmart.com they have slipcovers just for the arms of recliners and sofas, faux leather type, and the dark brown ones were $5.96 each. They also have a tan color that was a little more.

I thought, this is just what he needs and not a lot of money! Especially since he has the lift up storage armrests and a full slipcover wouldn’t work. Hope that helps you 😀!

Make slip covers for both armrests, with matching throw pillows.
